Siemens aims to demonstrate ammonia for energy storage applications

Siemens develops a polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis cell (PEMEC) technology for producing hydrogen from renewable electricity. Its electrolysis technology portolio is called SILYZER and was launched in 2012 with the release of the SILYZER 100, a sub-1 MW PEMEC system. Since then, the company has released the SILYZER 200 in 2015, with a 1.25 MW to 2 MW capacity, and the SILYZER 300 in 2018, with a 6 MW capacity. So far, the company has been focused on the use of water electrolysis in energy storage applications and has deployed its system in multiple power-to-gas projects in Germany. Siemens plans to scale up the SILYZER portfolio by a factor of 10 every four to five years and eventually reach the 1,000 MW range beyond 2030, at which point the technology would be incorporated into the chemical industry.
