Preem tests CO₂ capture technology at Lysekil refinery to assess future scalability

March 26, 2021 | Case Study

Preem is a petroleum refiner based in Stockholm, Sweden, and wholly owned by Corral Petroleum Holdings, an oil and gas holding company. The Swedish company has refining operations in Lysekil and Gothenburg and exports its refined products to Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, the U.K., Germany, France, and North America. In 2019, Preem refined 18.9 million m3 of crude oil and 205,000 m3 of renewable feedstocks, resulting in Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions of 1.68 million tons, 0.04 million tons, and 94.6 million tons of CO2, respectively. In line with Sweden's climate ambitions, Preem has pledged to have net-zero emissions at its refineries by 2040 and across its value chain by 2045, but it has yet to announce targets for reducing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
