All solid-state batteries (SSBs) have emerged from academia into research-focused startups, many of which claim to achieve the same or improved metrics over incumbent Li-ion technologies. Despite the multitude of materials and processing combinations available to make a solid-state electrolyte, the largest hurdle will be manufacturability. Battery manufacturers have announced a combined 800 GWh production capacity by 2023, investing billions of dollars into large facilities. Next-generation battery developers like Ionic Materials are focusing on materials that are compatible with roll-to-roll manufacturing and achieve cost parity with current battery technologies.
