SoCalGas and Opus 12's demonstration of CO₂-to-methane electrolysis technology will have little commercial impact

December 17, 2019 | Case Study

Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) is the largest provider of natural gas in the region of Southern California in the U.S. In 2019, the company announced that it plans to replace 20% of its natural gas supply with renewable natural gas (RNG) by 2030. Even before the announcement, the company launched several pilot-scale projects for novel RNG technologies in collaboration with startups. One of the projects was a nine-month study in collaboration with Opus 12 to demonstrate a single-step CO2-to-methane electrochemical pathway.
