Due to their tunable emission properties and excellent stability, quantum dots (QDs) have allowed for improving LCD quality and created a market for premium QLED TV panels, thus pulling back adoption of OLED technology, which comes with its own barriers despite a greater color gamut and contrast. Samsung, as one of the leading display manufacturers, was among the pioneers to commercialize QLED. Its investment into Nanosys has likely paid off, however, and despite the high potential of QDs for display technologies, there are several competing developments that are being simultaneously pursued by major display makers, including Samsung. These are thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) OLED, QD-OLED panels (QDs as color filters), and electroluminescent QD displays, all of which can be flexible.
