There is growing evidence to support the important role microorganisms plays in skin health. Yet, up to this point, the majority of skin models employed in industry are overly simplified and neglect to capture the relationship microbes have with the skin. As a raw materials supplier for the beauty and personal care (BPC) market, BASF is investing significant resources to study the skin microbiome. In partnership with the International Center for Infectiology Research in Lyon, the company is creating new and complex skin models embedded with bacteria for testing its ingredients. Moreover, BASF aims to use these models to identify active ingredients to restore aging skin, treat skin with pigment disorders, and protect the skin against pollution.
