In July 2020, SABIC announced that its polycarbonate facility in Cartagena, Spain, would "become the first large-scale chemical production site of its kind to be run on entirely renewable power," with electric utility Iberdrola investing €70 million to build a 100 MW solar power facility by 2024 to provide renewable electricity. SABIC and Iberdrola said that this will be the largest on-site photovoltaic system in Europe. SABIC plans to make similar investments in renewable power globally, targeting 4 GW capacity by 2025 and 12 GW by 2030.
