nTopology uses generative design to improve NFL football helmets

In November 2019, the National Football League (NFL) announced a HeadHealthTECH challenge to provide funding for the development of improved helmet designs. This is partly in response to concerns in recent years over the rising number of cases of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) among former NFL players. Generative design (GD) software developer nTopology announced that it has partnered with Impressio, a startup that develops liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) materials for efficient energy dissipation, to develop optimized helmet designs made using 3D-printed LCE.
