Since we published our 2014 report "Powering Mobility in the Internet of Things: Strategies for Thin-Film and Flexible Battery Success," little has changed in the thin-film battery market. Much like supercapacitors, the technology remains a solution without a problem: For the majority of today's IoT devices, wearables, and medical applications, conventional Li-ion, primary, and alkaline batteries are able to address all the applications' battery needs at a fraction of the cost of thin-film batteries. Unlike supercapacitors, though, emerging technologies like electronic textiles and medical patches are clear market fits for thin-film batteries that cannot be addressed with incumbent Li-ion battery or coin cell solutions.
