The textile and dye-stuff industry in India is known for using vast volumes of water for textile finishing purposes. While it is a huge source of employment in the west and south of India, the textile industry has also become a burden, depleting fresh water resources from reservoirs and groundwater. To limit exploitation of water reserves, the state government of Gujarat has mandated strong reuse and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) regulations for industry (see the report), with the aim of long-term wastewater reuse targets of 70% by 2025 and 100% by 2030.
As a result, India is now a booming market for new wastewater reuse and ZLD technologies. In 2018, Modern Water in partnership with Advent Envirocare built the world's first FO-based brine recycling facility at Bodal Chemicals' dye and dye intermediate manufacturing plant in Gujarat, India.
