One of our key predictions at the start of 2018 was increased investment and acquisition activity around probiotics (and prebiotics). This prediction has come to life throughout the year, with General Mills' venture arm (301 Inc.) being particularly active. Of the 10 companies within its portfolio, five sell products containing probiotics. Of those five, three received investments in 2018, all led by 301 Inc.: NextFoods ($12 million round, $40 million to date), Kite Hill ($40 million round, $65 million to date), and Urban Remedy ($17 million round, $23 million to date). The other two companies with probiotic-containing products that have previously received investments from 301 Inc. are Farmhouse Culture and Good Culture.
