American Process Inc. (API) converts nonfood biomass to cellulosic sugars with a side stream of nanocellulose. API can produce either nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) or nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC), or a blend, by controlling the time and temperature of pretreatment. The maximum NFC yield is 48 wt% of original biomass, while the maximum NCC yield is 24 wt%. API produces six nanocellulose products: unmodified NFC, NCC, and NFC/NCC mixed gels for hydrophilic applications and lignin-coated NFC, NCC, and NFC/NCC mixed sprays/gels for hydrophobic applications. The company is one of the largest producers of NCC and NFC, with a production capacity of up to about 0.5 tpd of dry nanocellulose at its facility in Thomaston, Georgia.
