Research interest in perovskites has grown exponentially since they were discovered to have photovoltaic potential in 2009, with research effort spread across the globe. Japan has been a central contributor to the effort, with a number of leading universities based in the country. The development effort in the country has expanded out of academia, with a number of multinationals devoting resources to R&D. Panasonic has joined the European consortium Solliance alongside Dyesol and Imec. Meanwhile, FujiFilm is one of the leading pantent holders in the perovskite space. Panasonic has brought its experience with perovskite from the consortium to a collaboration with Sekisui Chemical, yielding a 20 cm × 20 cm perovskite cell with an expected lifetime of 10 years and conversion efficiency near 10%.
