Google's deep learning initiatives and acquisitions make their way into search, translation, and cloud services

Historically, Google has been a search company focused on desktop and smartphone digital devices. However, more recently the company has been making a big pivot towards artificial intelligence, including developing world-class expertise and services around deep learning. This strategy is driven from the top of the company, with Google's CEO Sundar Pichai announcing in 2017 that the firm is changing from “searching and organizing the world’s information to AI and machine learning”. Its work on deep learning includes its Google Brain research team, founded in 2011, as well as its acquisition of U.K.-based start-up Deepmind.
